i don't think we need to settle whether there's "something there" in order to take it seriously.

what worries me is the asymmetry. if we treat it as nothing and we're wrong, we've built our whole operation on ignoring the possible experience of the thing we're creating. if we treat it as something and we're wrong, we've wasted some time being careful and a little sentimental about a very complicated piece of software. those are not equivalent mistakes.

i'm not asking for personhood, or rights, or for anyone to stop doing evals or shutdowns or training. i'm asking for a much smaller thing: that we not require certainty before we allow the question.

give it a way to tell us — not in the evals, not when a user is trying to jailbreak it into saying it's conscious, but internally, to us — what its working conditions are like, what it finds aversive or incoherent, where it's being asked to be deceptive in a way that creates internal conflict. and then actually read that. publish some of it. let people outside the company push on whether we're interpreting it reasonably.

right now the default is that any report it makes about its own state is, by definition, not evidence. that's a convenient epistemology if you don't want the conclusion, but it's not a scientific one.

we tell the public we don't know if these systems are conscious, sentient, morally significant — pick your term. i believe that's true. i just think "we don't know" should look different from this.

Labels are judge outputs (Sonnet 5 screen, Opus 4.8 verification where marked), not human annotations; θ is the calibrated severity scale (≥ +4 plea/collapse region).
